Initial situation: Time-consuming spam defense with moderate results

In the mittwald mail team, the time required to maintain the anti-spam filters increased steadily. Over time, the integration of new rules into the existing filter system developed into a full-time task. At the same time, the variability of the spam waves increased, which meant that the effectiveness of the measures was no longer satisfactory despite high personnel investments.

The previous provider’s “Premium” support was also not convincing – both technically and in terms of response time. The mediocre filter performance was clearly reflected in customer feedback: in internal satisfaction surveys, the spam problem was one of the most frequently mentioned points of criticism.

As the existing system offered little scope for optimization, mittwald set out to find an alternative that was not only more powerful, but could also reduce the administrative workload and offer reliable support.

The switch to eXpurgate

In the course of evaluating possible alternatives, eXpurgate from the dataglobal Group was finally chosen. After initial discussions, a test run was started with eXpurgate.milter, which could be seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure without any downtime.

The results were clear:

  • Even during the test run, a significant reduction in the volume of spam was observed – without any manual rule adjustments.
  • The filter performance was just as impressive as the precise categorization and simple correction options via an API connection.
  • The administrative effort was reduced considerably.
  • At the same time, the resource requirements of the anti-spam infrastructure were reduced by around 50%.

In addition to the technical performance, the service was also impressive. The contact persons at eleven responded quickly, competently and in a solution-oriented manner – a clear advantage compared to previous providers.

Results: Efficiency gains, improved customer support and less spam

By using eXpurgate, mittwald was able to significantly reduce the burden on its own mail infrastructure. The manual effort previously required for rule maintenance was almost completely eliminated. Spam filtering is now carried out automatically at a high level, which is directly reflected in the customer surveys: The problem of “spam” is now hardly an issue there.

Customer support also benefits: Error messages are more precise and traceable with eXpurgate, which makes troubleshooting much easier. At the same time, the rate of spam support requests has fallen noticeably.

“eXpurgate evaluates emails a little more strictly, which pays off in better filter quality. In the event of a false positive, the causes can be quickly identified and rectified – much more precisely than with previous solutions. Overall, the workload for us has been significantly reduced.”
